Achieving such sophisticated work was an extremely labor-intensive process in the past. Trained artists employed a range of tools to produce illustrations and decorations on handmade paper using handcrafted ink and paint. Fanciful borders, intricate plant motifs, and magnificent icons were only a few common design elements.

Illustrations in manuscripts reflected the symbolic language of the period, as it conferred meaning on various subjects or themes. The use of interlocking circles, concentric patterns of leaves, stars, and other motifs aimed to distinguish the religious or courly content. Bay trees and foliage motifs were used to counterpoint architectural conceits.
