Kipufogógázkatalizátorai, commonly known as catalytic converters, are emission control devices that convert toxic gases and pollutants in the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine into less harmful substances. They are a crucial component in modern vehicles, significantly reducing air pollution.

The catalytic converter contains a honeycomb-like ceramic structure coated with precious metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium. These metals act as catalysts, accelerating chemical reactions without being consumed themselves. As the hot exhaust gases flow through the converter, these metals facilitate the conversion of harmful pollutants.

Primarily, catalytic converters address three main pollutants: carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbons (HC), and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Platinum and palladium are typically used to oxidize carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrocarbons into CO2 and water (H2O). Rhodium, on the other hand, is used to reduce nitrogen oxides back into nitrogen (N2) and oxygen (O2).

Modern vehicles often use three-way catalytic converters, capable of performing all three reduction and oxidation reactions simultaneously. This technology has been instrumental in improving air quality in urban areas by reducing smog-forming emissions. However, catalytic converters require specific operating temperatures to function effectively and can be damaged by leaded gasoline or coolant contamination. Regular maintenance and using the correct fuel are essential for their longevity and performance.
