Kierrätettävyys is a Finnish term that translates to "recyclability" in English. It refers to the ability of a material or product to be processed and transformed into new raw materials or products. This process is a crucial component of waste management and aims to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators, thereby conserving natural resources and minimizing environmental pollution.

The recyclability of a material depends on several factors, including its composition, the availability of recycling infrastructure, and the economic feasibility of the recycling process. Different materials have varying degrees of recyclability. For instance, metals like aluminum and steel are highly recyclable, as are many types of glass and paper. Plastics, however, present a more complex challenge due to the wide variety of polymer types and additives used in their production, making them harder to sort and recycle effectively.

Effective recycling programs rely on public participation, proper sorting of waste at the source, and advanced sorting technologies at recycling facilities. The goal of improving recyclability is to create a circular economy, where materials are kept in use for as long as possible, extracting the maximum value from them before recovering and regenerating products and materials at the end of each service life.
