The keuhkovaltimo, also known as the pulmonary artery, is a major artery that originates from the right ventricle of the heart and carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs. It is the sole artery in the adult body that carries deoxygenated blood. Upon exiting the right ventricle, the pulmonary artery ascends briefly before branching into two main pulmonary arteries, one for each lung. These then further subdivide within the lungs, eventually leading to capillaries that surround the alveoli, where gas exchange occurs.

The pulmonary artery plays a crucial role in the pulmonary circulation system. In the lungs, the deoxygenated blood releases carbon dioxide and picks up oxygen. The now oxygenated blood then returns to the left atrium of the heart via the pulmonary veins. This pathway is essential for supplying the body with the oxygen it needs for cellular respiration.

Conditions affecting the pulmonary artery can have serious health consequences. Pulmonary hypertension, for instance, is a condition characterized by high blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries. Other conditions include pulmonary embolism, where a blood clot blocks an artery in the lungs, and pulmonary atresia, a congenital defect where the pulmonary valve fails to develop properly. The health of the keuhkovaltimo is therefore vital for overall cardiovascular function.
