Keskustakirjasto, literally “central library” in Finnish, is the term used for the main public library in a municipality. It typically serves as the primary hub of the city’s library network, housing a large portion of the circulating collection and offering reference services, study spaces, and public programs. Central libraries often coordinate interlibrary loans and digital services for the whole municipal system and act as cultural venues that host exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and children’s activities.

In Finland, municipal libraries are part of the public library system funded by municipalities and, in some cases, national or regional support. The central library is usually located in or near the city center and is designed to be accessible and welcoming to a broad audience. It combines traditional book-based services with modern offerings such as digital media, information services, and spaces for collaboration, learning, and community use. A notable contemporary example is the Helsinki Central Library Oodi, opened in 2018. Located near Helsinki’s central station, Oodi embodies the modern central library as a civic space, providing flexible reading areas, meeting rooms, multimedia studios, children’s facilities, and event spaces. It is widely recognized for its architectural design and its role as a symbol of public culture and participation.
