Keskkõrvaprobleem is the Estonian term for middle ear problems. The middle ear is an air-filled cavity located behind the eardrum, containing the ossicles (malleus, incus, and stapes) which transmit sound vibrations to the inner ear. Problems in this area can significantly affect hearing and cause discomfort.

The most common middle ear problem is otitis media, or middle ear infection. This can be acute, characterized by sudden onset of pain, fever, and temporary hearing loss, or chronic, which may involve persistent fluid in the middle ear (otitis media with effusion) or recurrent infections. Acute otitis media is often caused by bacteria or viruses, frequently following a cold or upper respiratory infection.

Symptoms of middle ear problems can include ear pain (otalgia), a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear, muffled hearing or hearing loss, and sometimes fever. In children, irritability and difficulty sleeping can be indicators.

Diagnosis typically involves examining the ear with an otoscope to visualize the eardrum and middle ear. Further tests, such as tympanometry or audiometry, may be used to assess middle ear function and the degree of hearing loss.

Treatment varies depending on the specific condition. Acute infections may be managed with pain relievers and, in some cases, antibiotics. Chronic fluid or recurrent infections might require monitoring, antibiotics, or surgical interventions like the insertion of ventilation tubes (grommets) to drain fluid and equalize pressure. Early diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial to prevent potential long-term complications, such as permanent hearing impairment or speech development delays in children.
