Keskkonnasüsteem, commonly translated as environmental system, refers to the complex network of living organisms and their physical environment that interact with each other. This system encompasses all biotic (living) components, such as plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms, as well as abiotic (non-living) components like water, air, soil, sunlight, and minerals. The interrelationships between these components are crucial for the functioning and stability of the system.

These systems can vary greatly in scale, from a small pond to a vast forest or an entire ocean. Each system has its own unique characteristics and dynamics, but they all share fundamental ecological principles. Energy flows through these systems, typically originating from sunlight and being converted by producers (like plants) into usable forms. This energy is then transferred to consumers (herbivores, carnivores, omnivores) and decomposers. Nutrient cycles, such as the water cycle, carbon cycle, and nitrogen cycle, are also integral to environmental systems, ensuring the continuous availability of essential elements for life.
