kerület

Kerület is a Hungarian term for an administrative district within a city. It is used to describe a subdivision that has its own local government within the larger municipality. In Hungary the most prominent usage is in Budapest, where the city is divided into 23 kerületek (districts), numbered I through XXIII. Each kerület has a local government with a mayor (polgármester) and a representative body (képviselő-testület) and is responsible for certain public services and urban affairs within its territory, operating under national and city laws and budgets.

Budapest kerületek also manage district facilities like schools, healthcare centers, cultural institutions, and local transport stops; budgets are consolidated into the city's budget.

Outside Budapest, the term applies to similar subdivisions in other cities, though the exact powers vary. The word evokes a belt or ring around the city center; it is often used interchangeably with 'városrész' (city part) in everyday language.
