This system typically involves multiple parallel pipes or conduits, each dedicated to carrying a specific flow. For instance, one layer might be designated for stormwater runoff, while another handles sanitary sewage.

The primary advantage of kerrosviemärit is improved efficiency and reduced risk of overflow. By segregating flows, the system can be optimized for the volume and characteristics of each type of wastewater. Stormwater, which is often voluminous but relatively clean, can be directed to treatment or directly to receiving waters after minimal processing. Sanitary sewage, which is more concentrated and requires more extensive treatment, is kept separate.

This separation can also facilitate more targeted treatment processes. For example, if a separate stormwater pipe is less polluted, it might bypass some of the more intensive treatment stages required for domestic wastewater. This can lead to cost savings and a more sustainable approach to wastewater management.

However, kerrosviemärit are also more complex to design and construct than conventional single-pipe systems. They require more space underground and can be more challenging to maintain and repair due to their layered structure. The initial investment for such a system is also generally higher.
