Kehaõõntesse refers to the body cavities, which are fluid-filled spaces within the bodies of many animals. These cavities serve as spaces for organs to reside and allow for their expansion and movement. The presence and structure of body cavities vary significantly across the animal kingdom.

In many invertebrate animals, such as nematodes, a primary body cavity called a pseudocoel exists. This cavity is not completely lined by mesoderm, the germ layer that forms connective tissues and muscles. In contrast, coelomates, which include vertebrates, mollusks, and annelids, possess a true coelom. The coelom is a fluid-filled space entirely enclosed by mesoderm, providing a more complex arrangement for organs and facilitating greater mobility. The coelom also plays a role in circulation and waste removal.

The human body, for example, is divided into two major body cavities: the dorsal cavity and the ventral cavity. The dorsal cavity, located at the back of the body, contains the cranial cavity (housing the brain) and the vertebral cavity (containing the spinal cord). The ventral cavity, located at the front of the body, is further subdivided into the thoracic cavity (containing the heart and lungs) and the abdominopelvic cavity (containing organs like the stomach, intestines, liver, and reproductive organs). The diaphragm separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominopelvic cavity. These cavities offer protection to vital organs and allow for their proper functioning.
