Kaukolämpösyöttö, often translated as district heating supply, refers to the system by which heat is distributed from a central source to buildings within a localized area. This centralized production allows for greater efficiency in energy generation compared to individual heating systems. The heat is typically produced in a district heating plant, which can utilize various fuel sources, including biomass, waste incineration, natural gas, or even geothermal energy. The heat is then transported through a network of insulated underground pipes, known as the district heating network, to consumers' premises.
Once the hot water reaches a building, it enters a heat exchanger. This device transfers the heat
