Katsastusten refers to the mandatory vehicle inspection process in Finland. It is a legal requirement for all registered motor vehicles to undergo regular inspections to ensure they meet safety and environmental standards. The term "katsastus" translates to inspection or examination.

The primary purpose of katsastusten is to enhance road safety by identifying and rectifying any defects in a vehicle's braking system, steering, suspension, lights, tires, and other critical components. Additionally, these inspections assess a vehicle's emissions to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and minimize pollution.

The frequency of katsastusten depends on the type and age of the vehicle. New passenger cars typically undergo their first inspection after four years of registration, followed by inspections every two years. Older vehicles and certain commercial vehicles may have more frequent inspection requirements.

The inspection is carried out by authorized inspection stations. During the katsastus, a trained inspector examines the vehicle according to a set checklist. If the vehicle passes, a sticker is affixed to the windshield, indicating the next inspection due date. If it fails, the owner is provided with a list of defects that need to be repaired. The vehicle must then be re-inspected after the necessary repairs have been made. Failure to present a valid katsastus can result in fines and the inability to legally drive the vehicle.
