Katonaság is the Hungarian term for the armed forces or military, referring to the national institution responsible for defense, deterrence, and security. It encompasses the personnel, equipment, and organizational structures that defend the country’s sovereignty and support civilian authorities in emergencies, as well as participate in international operations and missions.

The core institution is the Magyar Honvédség (Hungarian Defence Forces), which includes the Ground Forces (land forces) and the Air Force. The armed forces operate under civilian control, typically through the Ministry of Defence, and cooperate with international partners to maintain security, contribute to peacekeeping, and fulfill alliance obligations.

Historically, katonaság in Hungary has undergone several transformations—from feudal and imperial systems to modern, professional forces aligned with contemporary security frameworks.
