Katodiputkena is a Finnish term that translates to "cathode ray tube" in English. It refers to a vacuum tube in which a beam of electrons is projected from an electron gun and strikes a phosphorescent surface, causing it to glow. This technology was fundamental to the development of early electronic displays, most notably in televisions and computer monitors.

The operation of a cathode ray tube relies on several key components. An electron gun, typically at the rear of the tube, generates and accelerates a stream of electrons. These electrons are then focused into a narrow beam. Deflection coils or plates, usually located around the neck of the tube, manipulate the direction of the electron beam, allowing it to scan across the screen. The inner surface of the screen is coated with phosphors, which emit light when struck by the energetic electrons. By controlling the intensity of the electron beam and its position on the screen, images can be formed.

The first practical cathode ray tube was developed by Karl Ferdinand Braun in 1897. Over the following decades, the technology was refined and became the dominant display technology for over half a century. While largely superseded by modern flat-panel display technologies like LCD and OLED, the cathode ray tube played a crucial role in the history of electronics and visual media.
