Katalizatore is a term derived from the Greek words "kata" meaning down and "lyein" meaning to unbind or loosen. It refers to a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without itself undergoing any permanent chemical change. This process is known as catalysis. Catalysts work by providing an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy, meaning less energy is required for the reaction to occur. They do not alter the equilibrium position of a reversible reaction; they only affect the speed at which equilibrium is reached.

There are several types of catalysts. Homogeneous catalysts are in the same phase as the reactants, often dissolved in the same solvent. Heterogeneous catalysts, on the other hand, are in a different phase from the reactants, typically a solid catalyst with liquid or gaseous reactants. Enzymes are biological catalysts, usually proteins, that accelerate biochemical reactions within living organisms. Catalysts can be highly specific, meaning they only promote a particular reaction or a narrow range of reactions. The discovery and application of catalysts have been crucial in many industrial processes, including the production of ammonia, sulfuric acid, and plastics, as well as in environmental applications like catalytic converters in automobiles to reduce harmful emissions.
