A katétertípus, or catheter type, refers to the classification of medical devices used to drain fluids from the body or introduce fluids into it. These devices are typically hollow tubes made of flexible materials like silicone, latex, or polyurethane. Catheter types are primarily distinguished by their intended use, design, and insertion location.

Urinary catheters are among the most common, used to drain the bladder when normal urination is not possible. These can be intermittent catheters, used for a single drainage session, or indwelling catheters, which remain in place for extended periods. Other significant catheter types include intravenous (IV) catheters, inserted into a vein to administer fluids, medications, or blood, and central venous catheters, which are larger and inserted into a large vein to provide long-term access for therapies. Surgical drains, used to remove excess fluid from surgical sites, also fall under the broad umbrella of catheter types. Specialized catheters exist for a multitude of other medical procedures, including cardiac catheterization, which examines heart function, and gastrointestinal catheters, used for feeding or drainage. The choice of catheter type depends on the specific medical condition, the duration of use, and the patient's anatomy.
