For plants, key growth requirements include sunlight for photosynthesis, water for hydration and nutrient transport, carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and a suitable growing medium, typically soil, which provides essential mineral nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Temperature also plays a crucial role, with different plants having optimal ranges for germination, growth, and flowering.

Animals have different sets of needs. Food is a primary requirement, providing energy and building materials. The type of food needed varies greatly, from herbivores consuming plants to carnivores eating meat and omnivores eating both. Water is essential for all animals for metabolic processes and hydration. Oxygen is required for respiration in most multicellular animals. Shelter and a suitable habitat are also critical for protection from predators, harsh weather, and for reproduction. Social needs, such as for herd animals, can also be considered a growth requirement.

Microorganisms, like bacteria and fungi, also have specific growth requirements. These often include specific nutrient sources, such as sugars or proteins, and appropriate temperature and pH levels. Some microorganisms require oxygen, while others are anaerobic and thrive in its absence.
