Karácsony is the Hungarian name for Christmas, the Christian festival that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. In Hungary and among Hungarian communities, the holiday combines religious observance with family customs. Western Christian churches celebrate on December 25; some Orthodox communities may observe Epiphany or January 7, depending on the calendar used.

In Hungary, the Christmas season concentrates on Advent preparations, with families decorating a Christmas tree (karácsonyfa) and setting up an Advent wreath. The tree is commonly adorned with lights and ornaments, and bejgli, a rolled pastry filled with poppy seed or walnuts, is a traditional dessert. A popular Christmas candy is szaloncukor, often hung on the tree.

Traditional customs include Mikulás (St. Nicholas) on December 6, who brings small gifts for children, and December 24 (Szenteste), when families gather for a festive meal, exchange gifts, and attend church services. On Christmas Eve many households prepare a meatless or fish-based meal, with fish such as carp being a common dish, followed by sweets and bejgli.

The Christmas season continues on December 25 (Karácsony) and December 26 (Second Day of Christmas), and in many places extends to Epiphany on January 6. Modern celebrations feature Christmas markets, choir music, and public holiday observances, alongside private family gatherings.
