Kapillärstrukturen, often referred to as capillary structures, are a fascinating aspect of fluid dynamics and porous media. They describe the behavior of liquids within narrow tubes or porous materials where surface tension forces become dominant over gravitational forces. These structures are characterized by the small diameter of the channels, typically on the order of micrometers or nanometers.

The core principle behind capillary structures is the interplay between adhesion and cohesion. Adhesion is the attractive force between the liquid and the solid surface of the capillary, while cohesion is the attractive force between the liquid molecules themselves. When adhesion is stronger than cohesion, the liquid will "wet" the surface and rise within the capillary. This phenomenon is known as capillary rise, governed by the Jurin's Law, which states that the height a liquid rises is inversely proportional to the capillary's radius.

Conversely, if cohesion is stronger, the liquid may be repelled by the surface, leading to capillary depression. This effect is observed with mercury in glass tubes, for example. Capillary structures play a crucial role in various natural and industrial processes. In biology, they are essential for water transport in plants (xylem) and blood circulation in small vessels. In geology, they influence groundwater movement and oil extraction. Industrially, capillary phenomena are exploited in technologies like inkjet printing, chromatography, and wicking fabrics. Understanding capillary structures allows for the design and optimization of systems where fluid transport and retention in confined spaces are critical.
