Kantoninkieltä, often referred to as Cantonese, is a major Chinese dialect or language spoken in Guangzhou (formerly Canton) and the surrounding areas of southern China, including Hong Kong and Macau. It is also spoken by many overseas Chinese communities around the world. Linguistically, it is classified as one of the southern Chinese languages, and it is distinct from Mandarin, which is the official language of mainland China.

Cantonese is characterized by its complex tonal system, typically having six or more tones, which are crucial for distinguishing the meaning of words. This is a significant difference from Mandarin, which has four main tones. The vocabulary and grammar of Cantonese also differ from Mandarin. For example, it retains a more archaic grammar and has a richer lexicon of colloquialisms and idioms.

Written Cantonese often uses standard written Chinese, which is largely based on Mandarin.
