Kallonpäätä is a Finnish term that generally refers to the calvaria, the upper domed portion of the skull that forms the cranial vault and protects the brain. It excludes the facial skeleton and the base of the skull.

Anatomy and structure: The calvaria is formed mainly by the frontal bone at the forehead, the two parietal bones on the top and sides, and the occipital bone at the back. These bones are joined by sutures—the coronal, sagittal, and lambdoid sutures—that allow growth during development.
