Kallioperä, or bedrock, refers to the solid rock that forms the immediate substrate beneath soil, sediments, and other superficial deposits. It constitutes the most ancient and coherent component of the Earth's crust in a given location and provides the structural basis for surface geology.

Bedrock is composed of three major rock families: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. In practice, a regional bedrock profile reflects a long geological history. In many areas bedrock is crystalline and highly resistant, such as granite, diorite, gneiss, schist, or quartzite. Other regions feature sedimentary rocks like sandstone or limestone or younger volcanic rocks. Weathering, fractures, and fault zones create a varied internal structure that influences hydrology, stability, and groundwater flow.

In engineering and construction, bedrock is a key reference layer for foundations, tunnels, and quarries. Drilling, geophysical surveys, and rock outcrop mapping are used to determine rock quality, depth to bedrock, and fracture networks. Bedrock topography shapes landscape, soil development, and natural hazards such as rockfalls or landslides, especially where weathering is active.

In Finland, kallioperä denotes the ancient bedrock that underlies the Finnish Shield, dominated by Precambrian crystalline rocks such as granite, granodiorite, and gneiss. The term is widely used in geological mapping to distinguish solid rock from overlying sediments and peat.
