Caesium-137 (137Cs) is a synthetic radioactive isotope of caesium. It is produced as a byproduct of nuclear fission, primarily in nuclear reactors and in the detonation of nuclear weapons. Caesium-137 has a half-life of approximately 30.17 years, meaning that after this period, half of the initial amount will have decayed. It decays by beta emission to a stable isotope of barium, Barium-137.
Due to its relatively long half-life and its chemical properties, which cause it to behave similarly to
