Kabelbyten is a Dutch-language term used in telecommunications and computer networking to describe data that is carried by a cable-based communication link. The term combines kabel (cable) and byten (bytes) and is typically employed in informal or explanatory contexts rather than as an official unit of measurement. In practice, kabelbyten can refer to the amount of data that has been transmitted through a cable segment or stored as a payload on the link, rather than the signaling speed of the link.

Because a byte equals eight bits, kabelbyten can be converted to bit-based quantities (1 kabelbyte = 8 bits). In technical contexts, data rate is usually expressed in bits per second (bps) or its multiples, while data volume is expressed in bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, and so on. The use of kabelbyten therefore emphasizes payload or data volume associated with a given cable, rather than the raw transmission rate.

The term is more common in Dutch-language materials and is not standardized in international measurement conventions. When precision is required, wording typically specifies the exact unit (for example, B/s for data rate or MB for data size) rather than relying on the informal term kabelbyten.
