It denotes the near-field area where dilution has not yet reduced the gas to safe levels and where responders must consider rapid changes in gas density, ventilation, and potential ignition sources.

Etymology and usage: The word combines kaasu (gas) and ympäri (around, about). Although not a formal international standard term, it appears in Finnish safety manuals, risk assessments, and training materials to help designate the most critical area during a leak, vent, or accidental release. The concept is used to communicate the gravity of the near-field plume and to guide initial response actions.

Characteristics: The size and shape of kaasuympäri depend on the release rate, the physical properties of the gas (density relative to air, flammability, and toxicity), as well as environmental conditions such as wind, temperature, and room geometry. Heavier-than-air gases tend to accumulate near the floor and form downward plumes, while lighter-than-air gases rise and disperse more quickly. Detection and mapping of the zone rely on gas detectors, wind measurements, and dispersion models to estimate concentrations at different distances from the source.
