Kaasunkehitys, sometimes referred to as gasification, is a thermochemical process that converts carbonaceous materials into a synthesis gas (syngas) at high temperatures. This syngas is primarily composed of hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO), with smaller amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and other gases. The feedstock for gasification can include a wide range of organic materials such as coal, biomass, municipal solid waste, and plastics.

The process typically involves partial oxidation of the feedstock in a controlled environment with a limited supply of oxygen or steam. The primary reactions include combustion, pyrolysis, and reduction. The high temperatures, generally between 700°C and 1600°C, break down the complex organic molecules into simpler gaseous compounds. The specific composition of the syngas depends on the feedstock used, the gasifying agent (oxygen, steam, air), and the operating conditions of the gasifier.

Syngas produced through gasification is a versatile intermediate product. It can be used as a fuel for power generation, either directly in gas turbines or engines, or after further processing. More significantly, syngas serves as a key building block for the synthesis of various chemicals and fuels, including methanol, ammonia, synthetic natural gas, and liquid fuels through processes like the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Gasification is often considered a cleaner alternative to direct combustion as it can reduce emissions of pollutants like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. It also offers a pathway for waste-to-energy solutions and the production of valuable products from renewable resources.
