These exchangers are crucial components in many industrial processes and HVAC systems, where efficient heat recovery or temperature control is necessary. The fundamental principle of operation involves bringing a hot gas and a cold gas into close thermal contact without allowing them to mix directly. Heat then flows from the hotter gas to the colder gas through a separating wall or by convection and conduction.

There are several types of kaasulämmönvaihdin designs. Plate heat exchangers utilize a series of thin, flat plates with corrugated surfaces to create a large surface area for heat transfer. In industrial settings, they are used in power plants to preheat combustion air, in chemical processing to recover waste heat, and in ventilation systems for buildings to recover heat from exhaust air.
