Külmutusvahend, also known as refrigerant or coolant, is a working fluid used in a refrigeration cycle. It is a substance that absorbs heat from one location and transfers it to another, typically from a colder area to a warmer area. This process is fundamental to the operation of refrigerators, air conditioners, and other cooling systems.

Külmutusvahends undergo phase changes, usually from liquid to gas and back to liquid, to achieve the heat transfer. In an evaporator, the liquid külmutusvahend absorbs heat from the space to be cooled and boils into a gas. This gas then travels to a compressor, which increases its pressure and temperature. The hot, high-pressure gas then flows to a condenser, where it releases heat to the surroundings and condenses back into a liquid. Finally, the liquid külmutusvahend passes through an expansion valve, where its pressure and temperature drop, preparing it to repeat the cycle.

Historically, various substances have been used as külmutusvahends, including ammonia, sulfur dioxide, and methyl chloride. However, many of these early refrigerants posed safety and environmental risks. Modern refrigerants are categorized based on their chemical composition, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and natural refrigerants like propane and CO2. Environmental concerns, particularly the ozone depletion potential (ODP) and global warming potential (GWP) of refrigerants, have led to regulations phasing out older types and promoting the development and use of more environmentally friendly alternatives. The selection of a specific külmutusvahend depends on factors like the application, desired operating temperature, efficiency requirements, and environmental regulations.
