Körfubreyting, commonly known as basketball, is a popular team sport played between two teams of five players each. The objective of the game is to score points by shooting a ball through a hoop mounted on a vertical backboard at each end of the court. The name "körfubreyting" is the Icelandic term for basketball, combining *körfu* (basket) and *breyting* (throwing).

The game is played on a rectangular court with specific dimensions, and the hoop is elevated to a height of 3.05 meters (10 feet). Players cannot run while holding the ball; they must dribble it, which involves repeatedly tapping it against the floor.
