Kõrvakõdu is an Estonian term that translates to "earwax" in English. It refers to the natural secretion produced by glands in the ear canal. This substance, also known as cerumen, plays a vital role in protecting the ear. It acts as a natural cleanser and lubricant, trapping dust, debris, and foreign particles, preventing them from reaching the eardrum. Furthermore, earwax has antibacterial properties that help to ward off infections.

The composition of earwax varies from person to person, influencing its color, texture, and consistency. It typically ranges in color from pale yellow to dark brown and can be either dry and flaky or wet and sticky. The production of earwax is a continuous process, and the ear canal has a natural self-cleaning mechanism. Normally, earwax migrates outwards from the eardrum, carrying trapped debris with it, and eventually dries and falls out of the ear or is removed during normal hygiene.

Excessive buildup of earwax, known as impacted earwax or cerumen impaction, can occur if the self-cleaning mechanism is not functioning properly or if earwax is pushed deeper into the canal, for example, by using cotton swabs. Symptoms of impacted earwax can include a feeling of fullness in the ear, muffled hearing, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), dizziness, or earache. In such cases, it is advisable to seek medical attention for safe and effective removal.
