The purpose of a käyttöturvatiedote is to communicate hazard information to users, employers, and emergency responders. It typically includes sixteen standard sections covering various aspects of the chemical. These sections detail identification of the substance and the supplier, hazard identification, composition/information on ingredients, first-aid measures, fire-fighting measures, accidental release measures, handling and storage, exposure controls/personal protection, physical and chemical properties, stability and reactivity, toxicological information, ecological information, disposal considerations, transport information, regulatory information, and other information.

Käyttöturvatiedot are legally required for hazardous chemicals sold or used in Finland, adhering to European Union regulations like REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) and CLP (Classification, Labelling and Packaging). Manufacturers and importers of chemicals are responsible for preparing and providing these documents.
