Käynnistysvastus is a Finnish term that translates to "starting resistor" in English. It refers to a resistor or a series of resistors used in electrical circuits to limit the initial current flow when a device is powered on. This is particularly important for motors and other inductive loads, which can draw a significantly higher current during startup than during normal operation.

The primary function of a käynnistysvastus is to prevent damage to the electrical system and the device itself. High inrush currents can overload power supplies, blow fuses, and even damage the windings of motors. By introducing resistance at the moment of startup, the käynnistysvastus effectively "softens" the power delivery, allowing the current to rise more gradually.
