A käivitmootor, often referred to as a starter motor in English, is a crucial component in internal combustion engine vehicles. Its primary function is to initiate the engine's rotation, allowing it to start. Without a functioning starter motor, the engine would not be able to begin its combustion cycle on its own.

The starter motor is an electric motor powered by the vehicle's battery. When the ignition key is turned to the "start" position, or when a start button is pressed, an electrical current is sent to the starter motor. This current energizes a solenoid, which in turn engages a small gear called a pinion gear with a larger gear on the engine's flywheel.

Once the pinion gear is engaged, the starter motor begins to spin. This rotation is transferred to the flywheel, which in turn rotates the engine's crankshaft. As the crankshaft rotates, the pistons move up and down, drawing in the fuel-air mixture and igniting it, thus bringing the engine to life. Once the engine starts running under its own power, the starter motor is disengaged, and the engine's own rotational force keeps it going. Starter motors are designed to provide a high torque for a short period, enough to overcome the engine's inertia and compression resistance.
