Käärsoolt is a Finnish term referring to the small intestine. It is a long, coiled tube extending from the stomach to the large intestine, where it plays a crucial role in digestion and nutrient absorption. The small intestine is divided into three main sections: the duodenum, the jejunum, and the ileum.

In the duodenum, the first part of the käärsoolt, chyme from the stomach mixes with digestive enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver. These enzymes break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into smaller molecules. The jejunum, the middle section, is where most of the nutrient absorption takes place. Its inner lining is covered with villi and microvilli, which are finger-like projections that increase the surface area for absorption. These structures absorb essential nutrients like amino acids, glucose, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals into the bloodstream. The ileum, the final section of the käärsoolt, primarily absorbs vitamin B12, bile salts, and any remaining nutrients that were not absorbed in the jejunum.

The coordinated muscular contractions of the käärsoolt, known as peristalsis, move the chyme along its length, ensuring thorough mixing with digestive juices and continuous contact with the absorptive surfaces. Any undigested material and waste products then pass into the large intestine. Problems with the käärsoolt can lead to various digestive issues, including malabsorption, inflammation, and blockages.
