Jäätumisvastast, also known as antifreeze or coolant, is a liquid additive that is mixed with water and used in internal combustion engines to prevent both freezing and overheating. Its primary function is to lower the freezing point of the water and raise its boiling point. This dual action is crucial for protecting the engine's cooling system from damage caused by extreme temperatures.

The key component in most modern antifreeze formulations is ethylene glycol or propylene glycol. These glycols have a high boiling point and a low freezing point. When mixed with water, they create a solution with a significantly wider operating temperature range than water alone. This prevents the water from freezing in cold weather, which could cause engine blocks and radiators to crack due to ice expansion, and also prevents the water from boiling over in hot weather, which could lead to engine damage from overheating.

In addition to glycols, antifreeze typically contains a package of additives. These additives serve various purposes, including corrosion inhibition to protect metal parts of the cooling system, rust prevention, and pH buffering to maintain a stable chemical environment. Different types of antifreeze exist, often categorized by their chemical composition and the type of corrosion inhibitors they contain, such as conventional inorganic additives or modern organic acid technology (OAT). The correct type of antifreeze must be used for a specific vehicle's cooling system to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Regular checks and maintenance of the antifreeze level and condition are recommended by vehicle manufacturers.
