Jäähtymisprosesseja refers to the various physical processes by which an object or system loses thermal energy and thus decreases in temperature. This loss of energy typically occurs when the object or system is at a higher temperature than its surroundings. Conduction is the transfer of heat through direct contact. When a hotter object touches a colder one, the vibrating particles of the hotter object collide with the particles of the colder object, transferring kinetic energy and thus heat. This is why a metal spoon left in hot soup becomes hot.

Convection involves heat transfer through the movement of fluids, either liquids or gases. When a fluid is heated, it becomes less dense and rises, while cooler, denser fluid sinks. This circulation, known as a convection current, effectively transfers heat from the hotter region to the colder region. Examples include boiling water and the cooling of a room by a fan.

Radiation is the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves, such as infrared radiation. All objects above absolute zero temperature emit thermal radiation. A hot object will radiate more energy than a cooler object, leading to a net loss of heat if it is surrounded by cooler objects. The sun's heat reaching the Earth is a prime example of radiative heat transfer.

The rate at which an object cools depends on several factors, including its temperature difference with the surroundings, its surface area, and the material properties influencing conduction, convection, and radiation. Understanding these cooling processes is fundamental in many scientific and engineering disciplines, from thermodynamics and material science to meteorology and cooking.
