The operation of a cooling tower involves circulating warm water from the process that needs cooling. This water is typically sprayed or allowed to trickle down through a fill material, which increases the surface area for contact between the water and the air. As air passes over the wetted surfaces, a portion of the water evaporates, drawing heat away from the remaining water. The cooled water is then collected at the bottom of the tower and returned to the process.
