Jäähdytysteissä refers to cooling towers, which are heat rejection devices that cool water to an acceptable temperature for a wide range of industrial applications and commercial buildings. The fundamental cooling process involves evaporating a small amount of water, which absorbs heat from the remaining water. This cooling is a vital component in many industrial processes, such as power generation, chemical manufacturing, and refrigeration systems. Commercial applications include the cooling of air conditioning systems for large buildings.

There are several types of cooling towers, with the most common being natural draft and mechanical draft towers. Natural draft towers utilize the difference in air density between the hot, moist air inside the tower and the cooler, drier air outside to create airflow, often featuring large hyperbolic shapes. Mechanical draft towers, on the other hand, use fans to force or induce airflow through the tower, allowing for more precise control over the cooling process and typically having smaller footprints.

The operation of a cooling tower involves circulating warm water from the process that needs cooling. This water is typically sprayed or allowed to trickle down through a fill material, which increases the surface area for contact between the water and the air. As air passes over the wetted surfaces, a portion of the water evaporates, drawing heat away from the remaining water. The cooled water is then collected at the bottom of the tower and returned to the process. Regular maintenance is essential to ensure efficient operation and prevent issues like scaling, corrosion, and biological growth.
