Its primary function is to absorb heat generated by the engine during operation and dissipate it through the radiator. The most common type of coolant is a mixture of ethylene glycol or propylene glycol and water. Ethylene glycol is highly effective at lowering the freezing point and raising the boiling point of water, but it is toxic. Propylene glycol is less toxic and is often used in applications where accidental ingestion is a concern.

The ratio of glycol to water in the mixture is crucial for optimal performance. A 50/50 mixture is typical, providing protection against freezing down to approximately -37 degrees Celsius (-34 degrees Fahrenheit) and boiling at around 108 degrees Celsius (226 degrees Fahrenheit) under normal operating pressure. Higher concentrations of glycol offer greater freeze protection but can slightly reduce heat transfer efficiency. Water acts as the primary heat transfer medium, while the glycol component provides the necessary freeze and boil-over protection.

In addition to glycol and water, modern coolants contain a package of additives. These additives are vital for protecting the engine's cooling system components from corrosion and cavitation. They include rust inhibitors, anti-foaming agents, and lubricants for the water pump. The type and concentration of these additives vary depending on the coolant formulation and the specific requirements of different engine types and materials. Regular maintenance, including checking the coolant level and condition, and periodic flushing and refilling are essential to ensure the cooling system functions effectively and to prevent damage.
