Jäähdytyslohkoihin, often translated as heatsinks, are passive heat exchangers that cool electronic devices by dissipating heat into the surrounding environment. They are typically made of highly conductive materials like aluminum or copper, which efficiently transfer thermal energy away from the heat-generating component. The characteristic finned design of a heatsink significantly increases its surface area, allowing for more effective heat transfer through convection and radiation.

The primary function of a heatsink is to prevent electronic components, such as CPUs, GPUs, power transistors, and LEDs, from overheating. Excessive temperatures can degrade performance, reduce lifespan, and even cause permanent damage to these sensitive parts. By absorbing and radiating heat, heatsinks maintain the component's operating temperature within safe limits, ensuring reliability and optimal functionality.

Heatsinks come in various shapes and sizes, tailored to the specific cooling requirements of the application. Common types include pin-fin, plate-fin, and extruded heatsinks. The effectiveness of a heatsink can be further enhanced by using thermal paste or pads between the heatsink and the component, which fills microscopic air gaps and improves thermal conductivity. In some cases, active cooling methods, such as fans, are used in conjunction with heatsinks to force airflow over the fins and dramatically increase heat dissipation. This combination is known as active heatsink cooling.
