The juurtesüsteem, commonly referred to as the root system, is the non-photosynthetic part of a vascular plant. It typically grows below ground, anchoring the plant firmly in the soil and absorbing water and dissolved mineral nutrients. The primary functions of the juurtesüsteem include anchorage, absorption, storage of food reserves, and sometimes vegetative propagation.

Roots exhibit various modifications based on their environment and function. Taproots, for example, are large, central roots from which smaller lateral roots sprout. These are often found in plants that need to reach deep water sources. Fibrous root systems, on the other hand, consist of many thin, branching roots that spread out close to the soil surface, providing excellent soil binding. Aerial roots grow above ground, serving purposes like support, climbing, or gas exchange.

The structure of a root includes a root cap at the tip, which protects the meristematic tissue responsible for growth. Just above the root cap is the zone of elongation, where cells increase in length. Further up is the zone of maturation, where root hairs develop, significantly increasing the surface area for absorption. Specialized root structures like pneumatophores are adapted for aeration in waterlogged soils, while storage roots, such as carrots and sweet potatoes, are modified for hoarding nutrients. The overall health and efficiency of the juurtesüsteem are critical for plant survival and productivity.
