Juurikanavia, often referred to as root canals, is a dental procedure designed to treat infection or damage within the pulp of a tooth. The pulp is the soft tissue inside the tooth, containing nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When this tissue becomes inflamed or infected due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures, or a crack or chip in the tooth, it can cause significant pain and may lead to an abscess.

The process of a root canal involves carefully removing the damaged or infected pulp from the tooth's inner chamber and root canals. After the pulp is removed, the inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and shaped. The empty canals are then filled with a special biocompatible material, typically gutta-percha, and sealed. Finally, the tooth is restored, usually with a filling or a crown, to protect it and return it to its full function.

Root canal treatment is a common and effective way to save a tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted. While historically associated with pain, modern techniques and anesthetics have made the procedure much more comfortable for patients.
