Jarrutans are a sapient, bipedal species native to the Jarrutan Archipelago and adjacent coastlands of the planet Valara in the Lapis system. They form coastal city-states and island networks, often linked by navigable channels and seasonal winds. The name Jarrutan is their exonym; their autonym translates roughly as "people of the tides."

Physically, adults stand about 1.6 to 1.9 meters tall, with slender builds and high mobility. Skin tones range from sea-green to bronze; hair is sparse or absent in many individuals. They have large eyes with irises from gold to amber, and hands with long, dexterous fingers. Their physiology shows adaptations to humid, saline environments and variable light.
