Today, the only two significant ice sheets on Earth are the Antarctic Ice Sheet and the Greenland Ice Sheet.

These ice sheets are formed over thousands of years through the accumulation and compression of snow. As new snowfall lands on top of older layers, the weight of the overlying snow compacts the lower layers, transforming them into ice. The sheer thickness of these ice sheets can be immense, reaching several kilometers in places, and they can significantly depress the underlying bedrock due to their immense weight.

The formation and melting of jégtakarók play a crucial role in global climate regulation. They reflect a significant amount of solar radiation back into space, helping to cool the planet. Conversely, the melting of these ice sheets contributes to sea-level rise, posing a threat to coastal communities worldwide. Scientists monitor their thickness, extent, and melt rates closely to understand the impacts of climate change.
