This occurs when the kinetic energy of the molecules is reduced to a point where intermolecular forces become dominant, locking them into a fixed structure.

The most common method of achieving jähmettämiseen is refrigeration. Refrigerators and freezers utilize thermodynamic cycles to remove heat from a confined space, lowering the temperature to below the freezing point of water (0 degrees Celsius or 32 degrees Fahrenheit) and thus causing liquids like water to solidify into ice.
