Izomériának is a term used in chemistry to describe a phenomenon where two or more chemical compounds have the same molecular formula but differ in their structural arrangement of atoms. These different compounds are called isomers. Isomers possess distinct physical and chemical properties, even though they are composed of the same types and numbers of atoms. The arrangement of these atoms in space or the connectivity between them leads to these differences.

There are several broad categories of isomerism. Structural isomerism, also known as constitutional isomerism, occurs when the atoms are connected in a different order. This can include chain isomerism, where the carbon skeleton is branched differently, position isomerism, where a functional group is attached at a different position on the carbon chain, and functional group isomerism, where compounds with the same molecular formula have different functional groups.

Stereoisomerism, on the other hand, involves compounds with the same molecular formula and the same connectivity between atoms but differ in their spatial arrangement. This includes enantiomers, which are non-superimposable mirror images of each other, and diastereomers, which are stereoisomers that are not enantiomers. Geometric isomerism, a type of diastereomerism, arises from restricted rotation around a chemical bond, often in alkenes or cyclic compounds, leading to cis and trans forms. Understanding isomerism is crucial in chemistry for predicting and explaining the behavior of substances.
