itemsep
itemsep is a LaTeX length parameter that controls the vertical space inserted between items in an enumerate or itemize list. It is defined in the preamble of a LaTeX document using the \setlength command. For example, \setlength{\itemsep}{10pt} would increase the spacing between list items by 10 points. Conversely, \setlength{\itemsep}{-5pt} would decrease the spacing, potentially causing items to overlap if the value is too negative. The default value for itemsep is typically small. Adjusting itemsep allows for fine-tuning the visual appearance and readability of lists. It is distinct from \parsep, which controls the space between paragraphs within an item, and \partopsep, which adds extra space before the first item of a list if it immediately follows a paragraph. Users might modify itemsep to achieve a desired aesthetic or to improve clarity in documents with lengthy list entries.
