Isotaktiivista refers to a specific type of stereoisomerism in polymers. In an isotactic polymer chain, all the substituent groups on the polymer backbone are oriented on the same side of the chain. This regular, repeating arrangement of side groups leads to a highly ordered structure.

The stereochemistry of the monomer units dictates whether a polymer is isotactic, syndiotactic, or atactic. For monomers with a chiral center, such as propylene, the orientation of the methyl group along the polymer chain determines its tacticity. In isotactic polypropylene, all methyl groups point in the same direction relative to the main carbon chain.

This high degree of order in isotactic polymers allows them to pack tightly into crystalline structures. This crystallinity significantly influences the material's physical properties, often resulting in increased strength, rigidity, and a higher melting point compared to their atactic counterparts, which have a random arrangement of substituent groups. Isotactic polymers are commonly produced using specific catalysts, such as Ziegler-Natta catalysts, which control the stereochemical outcome of the polymerization process. Examples of isotactic polymers include isotactic polypropylene and isotactic polystyrene.
