In common depictions it lies in the southern portion of the imaginary Noral Ocean and comprises about 12 to 15 volcanic islands and islets, ranging from small sea stacks to major landmasses totaling roughly 3,800 square kilometers.

Geography and geology

The islands form a north–south arc about 550 kilometers long. Terrain is varied, featuring steep volcanic cones, basalt cliffs, and low-lying, coral-fringed shores. The climate ranges from tropical to temperate maritime, with a rainy season typically from May to October.
