Isimba Falls

Isimba Falls is a hydroelectric dam built in Uganda on the overflowing water of Lake Kyoga which is then diverted and channeled down through the Simba valley to power the Isimba Dam. The dam is part of the long-term plan to generate power needed in Uganda and beyond.

Location

The Isimba Dam is located on the course of the River Kafu which feeds into Lake Kyoga in the districts of Buyende and Kamuli District, in eastern Uganda. It marks part of Uganda's Strategic Electrification Plan to connect the country to the East African intermediate voltage grid and beyond.

Construction

Construction of the Isimba Falls started in 2016 and was completed in 2019 at a total cost of US$571 million. The dam is of a concrete gravity type, with an installed generation capacity of 183 MW. When generating at its peak, the dam can supply up to 533 GWh of electricity per year.

Isimba Falls hydroelectric project is greatly leveraging on water from Lake Kyoga that flows during the rainy season. This water produced over 5.3 billion units of electricity. Power generated here is majorly transferred to Uganda Power grid from where Nile Power transmits the same to other neighboring East African states.
